SF Man Charged with Hate Crime, Felony Sex Assault After Attack on Asian Woman at San Jose Train Station

by Burk

A San Francisco man will be arraigned on felony hate crime charges this afternoon, after sexually assaulting an Asian woman as she waited for a morning commuter train in San Jose.

Johan Strydom, 32, grabbed the woman by her neck, flung her on her back to the cement and said, “(Expletive deleted) you, Asians.”

The minute-long attack lasted until her boyfriend, who had been on the phone with her when she was attacked, and other witnesses came to the woman’s aid, preventing him from getting away.

Strydom faces charges of assault with an intent to commit rape and assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury. The DA’s Office has added hate crime enhancements to the charges. If convicted, he faces a significant prison sentence. His arraignment will be at 1:30 p.m. in Department 24 of the Hall of Justice in San Jose. District Attorney Jeff Rosen will attend and speak after today’s hearing.

“This is every woman’s nightmare, and this is our community’s nightmare,” DA Rosen said. “This is also a tale of heroism. Our community came to this woman’s aid and stopped the attack. Hate crimes are not someone else’s problem. They are mine. They are yours. It will take all of us to confront them.

The attack happened around 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 10th.  A 26-year-old woman on her way to work, was waiting for a delayed northbound Caltrain in a pedestrian tunnel at the Diridon Station in San Jose. She was on the phone with her boyfriend.

Strydom – who she did not know – came up from behind her, grabbed her neck, pulled her to the ground, and tossed her side to side by her hair. She landed on her back, screaming, as he dragged her while repeating the slur against Asians.

The boyfriend, who had rushed back to the station in his car, and other witnesses stopped the attack. Some followed the suspect to a nearby bus stop.

As he made his way to the bus stop, the suspect repeated the ethnic slur and said, “You guys gonna come and save that ho?” San Jose police officers arrested the suspect minutes later near the SAP Center.
